Road Trip to the Bay

I have a soft spot for road trips. I think it has something to do with driving across the country many a time with my family when I was growing up. At the time it seemed so common, but now that I’m older I realize that driving across the country every summer, literally from California to Maine, is not common. And with the rising gas prices, it’s become even less so, which makes me sad. There’s something about being on the open road that is so strikingly alive to me. The ability to press the gas peddle down and feel yourself accelerate is one that never gets old. A favorite quote of mine captures these feelings rather succinctly I think: “Faster, Faster, until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death.” (Hunter S. Thompson)

Joe and I took a quick four day road trip up to the Bay Area this past weekend, driving along and through the familiar faces of the 5, the Bay Bridge, the East Bay, the West Bay, Treasure Island, and of course the City. It felt like home, as it always does. And I didn’t want to leave, but we always do. So ’till next time, as I always say.

While the City Slumbers

5

This is what Hollywood looks like at 7 a.m. on a Saturday. The road’s empty — everyone’s hung-over or sleeping in. You’re surrounded by thousands of people, but you can’t see them and you can’t hear them. The road is entirely yours, a road that come later in the day will most certainly be packed bumper to bumper. I guess what I’m trying to say is that there’s something very romantic and cinematic about driving through a sleeping city, and I very much enjoy it.

Keep pressing snooze, Los Angeles.
